Why points tallies and records offer no interest for Marcelo Bielsa

Marcelo Bielsa is only interested in Leeds United winning promotion this season, he’s revealed.

With the win at Preston on Tuesday night, Leeds hit a tally of 79 points - a significant number, given it’s the highest tally in the Championship since relegation from the Premier League in 2004.

In the pre-match press conference ahead of Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday , the Leeds boss was asked if he was proud of reaching that milestone.

"The only important thing is if we get promoted,” he responded. “I won't make any analysis until we meet this objective. We play with the obligation to get promoted, not to make the best season."

Leeds highest points tally in the second tier is 85 points, achieved by Howard Wilkinson’s team in the promotion season of 1989-90. There are five games left to play, and seven points would see Bielsa’s side overtake that number.

But that still might not be enough for promotion. Leeds have their fate in their own hands, with a one-point lead over third-place Sheffield United, and only five wins from the final five games can guarantee promotion to the Premier League.

The Blades take on Millwall on Saturday afternoon, shortly before Leeds host their city rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Bielsa has also laid down a challenge for his team ahead of the final five games , demanding they pick up maximum points to confirm promotion to the Premier League.
