Why plane from East Midlands Airport was circling low above parts of Nottinghamshire

A cargo plane that departed from East Midlands Airport was seen circling above parts of Nottinghamshire.

The ABX Air DHL flight from East Midlands Airport (EMA) had been heading for Chicago but had to turn back.

This was reported to be due to a "technical issue which prevents an oceanic crossing".

The incident was reported shortly before 7pm on Tuesday, August 18 through Aero Hub News.

Residents in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire reported seeing the plane circling.

The Airport Webcams Twitter account also posted the flight path from Flight Radar 24 of the Boeing 767 as it circled just off the coast of Ireland before heading back and 'holding' near EMA.

Aerohub News tweeted: "Incident: ABX Air N371CM (B76F) has turned back over the Atlantic Ocean with a yet-to-be identified issue en route from East Midlands to Chicago/O’Hare.

"Pilots have at present requested Knock Ireland West Airport (NOC) as a diversion."

It added: "Update: Pilots have now confirmed a return to East Midlands."
