Why Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby are hosting This Morning despite coronavirus lockdown

Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby have explained to viewers why they are still hosting This Morning despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Following Boris Johnson’s announcement of strict new measures on people leaving the house on Monday (March 23), the pair returned to the show yesterday to explain why they are still on TV.

The duo said they are classed as “essential workers” by the government and sat 2m apart as part of the government’s social distancing guidelines.

Hull Live reports that Phil kicked off the show by saying:  "Let's start off by explaining probably for the first time ever, why we are here today."

"The government has classed us as essential workers for the time being."

He explained this meant they will aim to: "Bring you the latest news on the virus and to answer your concerns with our doctors to offer useful advice and to hopefully lighten the load as only This Morning knows how."

The pair also revealed the mobile crew had brought studio cameras through from GMB via a hole in the wall.

Holly added: "We are running with a skeleton staff and for now on, with lots of people working from home."

The mum-of-one then went on to reassure viewers of the role they will play during "these worrying times".

She said: "Most importantly, we want you to know that we are here for you. We know that it is a really worrying time, but we want to answer your questions and take your calls and ultimately put your minds at rest."

Their announcement to viewers comes after Boris Johnson announced nationwide lockdown on Monday night.

The PM stressed the one most important action everyone should do to help tackle coronavirus is to "stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives."

Last week it was revealed fellow ITV show Good Morning Britain will also continue to air.

However, other daytime shows such as Loose Women and Lorraine have been temporarily postponed, to keep in with government guidelines.
