Why Philippe Coutinho transfer would see Liverpool miss out on major windfall

Philippe Coutinho has been heavily tipped to leave Barcelona this summer.

His record transfer to the Nou Camp last January has turned into a disaster for both parties with the Brazilian flattering to deceive.

He has endured a miserable season and the club are reportedly ready to move on from him in the summer with their Champions League humiliation at Anfield the final straw.

But with Coutinho attracting interest from a number of clubs keen to offer him a lifeline, it has now emerged that his departure this summer would see Liverpool miss out on an extra €20million (£17.35m) windfall.

One condition that could see Philippe Coutinho return to the Premier League

According to Mundo Deportivo , Barcelona are due to pay the Reds the installment when Coutinho plays 100 games for the club.

He is now stuck on 75 appearances and a summer departure would mean he never reaches his century for the Catalan giants.

They paid an initial fee of €120m for Coutinho, but that figure has now reached €135m as a result of installments.

Liverpool received €5m when he reached 25 official matches and another €10m as a result of Barcelona's La Liga title success.

Why Liverpool are growing in confidence in Matthijs de Ligt transfer rat race

Yet Liverpool dumping Barcelona out of the Champions League meant they missed out on another €5m they would have received if Coutinho had helped them win the competition.

An imminent departure could cost Liverpool an extra €20m - an interesting sub-plot to the transfer race which has seen the Reds linked with handing him a shock return.

Manchester United and Chelsea have also been reported to be interested in signing Coutinho, with the Blues seeing him as a potential replacement for Eden Hazard if the Belgian completes his move to Real Madrid .

According to Sport, Barcelona will demand a fee of upwards of £100m for the Brazilian playmaker.
