Why Philippe Coutinho isn't in Bayern Munich squad to face Union Berlin amid Chelsea links

Philippe Coutinho has not been included for Bayern Munich's Bundesliga clash at Union Berlin on Sunday.

Football in Germany has restarted behind closed doors amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Bayern resuming their season away at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei.

But Coutinho was not named in the Bundesliga leaders' squad for the clash, with the Brazilian still recovering from an ankle problem.

The Brazilian underwent surgery on the injury, but a setback in his rehabilitation has kept him on the sidelines.

Coutinho is on loan at the Allianz Arena until the end of the season, but looks set to return to parent club Barcelona with Bayern having no intention of taking up the option to sign him permamently.

The uncertainty over his future has seen the former Liverpool playmaker linked with a return to the Premier League, where Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle have been touted as potential destinations in recent weeks.

And Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick has admitted that he does not know what the future holds for the 27-year-old.

“I can't say what will happen with him after the season," Flick told reporters ahead of the Union Berlin clash.

“Philippe is a good guy and an excellent footballer. I really enjoy working with him.

"We hope he can be back with us again soon and play some games before the end of the season."
