Why Phil Jones is starting for Manchester United vs Sheffield United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained his decision to start Phil Jones in a Premier League match for the first time this season, after naming his side to face Sheffield United.

The Norwegian lauded Jones' attitude in training in the past few weeks, so with injuries to Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe at the back, along with Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba in midfield, Solskjaer said it was "an easy option" to pick Jones.

Despite coming in for criticism at times this season, Solskjaer's United have won five of their previous six games and the Norwegian will see his team leapfrog Sheffield United with a win this afternoon.

His side included just the one change from the team that beat Brighton 3-1 in United's last outing.

And before the match, Solskjaer explained his selections to MUTV.

He said: "Scotty is still a couple of weeks away, so we had to make the one change.

"Phil has been training well, he's got experience of playing both centre-midfield and at the back, so I thought when you show the attitude he's shown in training, it's time for him to get a chance.

"Marcos [Rojo] is injured, Axel [Tuanzebe] is not really ready to come in, so it was an easy option."

Solskjaer then explained why he'd kept teenager full back Brandon Williams in the side, at the expense of club captain Ashley Young.

He added: "Brandon has played really well in every game he's played for us, so I didn't find any reason to leave him out.

"It's a testing stadium, a testing ground for him to play at, but for him it's a good opportunity to show his mentality, because that's one of his strengths."
