Why Pep Guardiola is not excited about a Man City summer rebuild

Pep Guardiola has played down the idea of a major rebuild at Manchester City this summer.

Changes are expected on and off the field at the end of the season; a decision will have to be taken on Leroy Sane's future, there are outstanding questions over centre-back, left-back, and up front while Mikel Arteta is yet to be replaced in the backroom staff.

David Silva leaving means a departure for another of the club's long-standing players, and with the team 14 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League there have been predicted comparisons to the manager's first transfer windows at the club as he looks to respond to Jurgen Klopp's side.

City spent more than £130m in 2016 to stamp Guardiola's style on the club, bringing in players including Ilkay Gundogan (£20m), Leroy Sane (£37m), John Stones (£47.5m) and Claudio Bravo (£17.1m). They went even bigger the following year, smashing the £200m mark to bring in players ready-made for the first team squad such as Ederson, Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva.

Guardiola has already held talks with director of football Txiki Begiristain about which positions they need to strengthen in the coming summer, but has stressed publicly that his squad does not need major surgery.

Asked by Sky Sports if he was excited to rebuild the squad for next season, the manager indicated that the coming transfer window would not be similar to previous years.

"No because the excitement to build was when I arrived, when we had to do a lot of changes," he said. "Now we have to do it again but in an absolutely different way."
