Why Pep Guardiola doesn't expect this Man City season to top last year

Manchester City's season is unlikely to match their last campaign because it will not include the Premier League title, according to Pep Guardiola .

City scooped up their eighth title of the last nine available domestic trophies when they beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley to continue a silverware rush that the manager believes will be difficult for any team to match .

With Champions League hopes buoyed by a 2-1 win at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 clash, and Championship opposition Sheffield Wednesday coming up on Wednesday in the last 16 of the FA Cup, City could win two more trophies this season.

That Guardiola interrupted a question in his post-match press conference at Wembley referring to a domestic treble last season to claim that the Blues actually won four trophies was both jokey and also serious enough to know that he wasn't joking.

But even if another quadruple of sorts remains on the cards according to that criteria, Guardiola does not think this season can surpass the last when they held off Liverpool by a single point in the Premier League and won an unprecedented domestic clean sweep.

"The most beautiful one is the Premier League and we are not going to win so I don't think it is going to be better than last season," he said after the Carabao Cup final victory.

"I always believe the league is the most difficult one because it means you are consistent every single day. I think we were consistent enough compared to previous seasons - maybe not in that level but we have the numbers like a normal Premier League winner - but another team was exceptional so we accepted that and of course we have the aim of finishing second in the Premier League and also the FA Cup and Champions League."
