Why Pep Guardiola changed Man City training plans ahead of Bournemouth game

Manchester City shelved plans to fly to Spain this week for warm weather training ahead of the Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola had planned to take his squad away after the game against Tottenham as they had eight days to prepare for their third league game of the season but a decision was made for the team to stay in Manchester instead.

MEN Sport understands the trip to Spain was considered but the squad made the decision that it would be more beneficial to stay back in Manchester at their training base at the City Football Academy.

Guardiola has openly admitted his team are not yet fully fit and the trip to Spain would likely have included a game against fellow CFG team Girona. If it had gone ahead it would have been the second time in two seasons that City had played a friendly match after the start of the new season.

In 2017 the squad flew to Spain to face Girona after the season had started and before the visit of Everton in the Premier League.

City travel to Bournemouth at the weekend for their third game of the season where they will be looking to get back to winning ways having been held by Tottenham on Saturday.

Gabriel Jesus was denied a last minute winner after VAR ruled his goal out because of an Aymeric Laporte handball in the build up.
