Why people will be handing out 'Not The S*n' newspapers in Liverpool today

A new 'national newspaper' called 'Not the S*n' is being handed out in Liverpool today.

The new tabloid is the work of protestors Extinction Rebellion who produced the 24-page publication which is being distributed in 23 cities and towns.

Volunteers were outside Moorfields train station this morning handing out copies which were also available in London, Manchester, Leeds and Leicester.

'Not The S*n', which focuses on issues of climate change, was rejected by two major printers who refused to publish the newspaper, Extinction Rebellion claimed.

Extinction Rebellion said they were keen to make Liverpool one of their key distribution points today because of the city's decades-long boycott of the Rupert Murdoch owned title.

A spokesperson for the group said: "Our tabloid is an honest attempt to show what our most popular newspapers could be doing every day: telling the scary truth and how to deal with it - but still entertaining us and making us smile."

They added: "This country’s tabloid and mainstream newspapers could be a true voice of the people - inspiring us to face up to the accelerating climate crisis with Brit grit, and encouraging us to build a safe, optimistic future together."

They said: "We’ve created a national tabloid called Not The S*n to prove that you can be funny and punny, bold and punchy, while telling the truth about the worst crisis that humanity has ever faced, and, as importantly, offering hope for a better tomorrow for everyone

"Not The S*n punches up at the politicians and powerbrokers of every party who are doing too little, too late to tackle the climate emergency, rather than punching down at immigrants, the poor, marginalised and powerless as scapegoats for our mounting environmental, social and economic problems."

The new tabloid is the latest action from Extinction Rebellion who last September blockaded a newspaper printing plant in Knowsley.

The blockaded presses print The S*n, Times, S*n on Sunday and Sunday Times, as well as the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, and the Evening Standard.

The protest prevented 1,100 retailers from receiving newspapers and reportedly cost publishers £1.2m.

It was criticised at the time as an attack on the free press by Boris Johnson, and condemned by the Society of Editors as an “attempt to silence other voices”

A spokesman added: "We need you to tell the truth because our survival and the survival of our children depends upon it.”
