Why people who marry teachers end up being happier than others

People who teach for a living might want to think about adding their job description to their dating profile.

Educational publisher Pearson surveyed students asking them what qualities they look for in a good teacher.

And the results were very similar to the kind of traits that people look for in their other half.

They included being patient, caring, supportive and kind.

Southern Living took the survey one step further, and compiled a list of reasons why people who marry teachers end up in the happiest marriages.

Good listeners

Teachers take the time to develop relationships with their students, which involves listening to them and encouraging them to speak up when they don't understand the work.

They're responsible

Teachers are responsible in so many ways. They have to be extremely organised - planning lessons and marking work. The job also requires the trust of parents - especially when it comes to younger children.

A big part of their job is being responsible for educating the next generation.

Teachers are patient, caring, supportive and kind

Know how to communicate

Engaging and motivated

Dedicated and passionate

They take the time out each day to get to know their students, nurture them, educate them and help them when they don't understand their work. This takes a great deal of patience and kindness. Successful communication is key in every relationship. Communicating in a productive way can resolve issues quickly with far less stress - resulting in building a stronger relationship. Teachers who keep pupils engaged will be better at motivating them because they have made the effort to build some middle ground first - therefore tapping into their full potential. People who teach regularly work out of hours marking books or running revision classes. People who go into the industry tend to do so out of a passion for the job, as opposed to a financial goal. A person who shows that level of passion and commitment to a cause would undoubtedly help cement a strong and lasting relationship, according to Southern Living.
