Why people may see more bright green parakeets in parks as birds settle in Liverpool

The bright green parakeets have become a spectacle in the city over the years, however, not many people know how they arrived in Liverpool.

Ring-necked parakeets began breeding in the south of England in the 1960s but have been frequently spotted in Merseyside as the years have gone by.

The stunning birds have been regularly spotted in Sefton Park, Princes Park, Cressington Park and other areas of Liverpool.

The ring-necked parakeet's roots stem to tropical countryside's stretching from west Africa across lowland India south of the Himalayas, where it is a common bird.

Researchers at The University of Kent have traced the majority of the United Kingdom's parakeets to Pakistan and northern India, with other research pointing to Africa.

Why have parakeets settled in the UK?

Theories surrounding how parakeets became common in the UK vary considerably, from having been released by owners after the parrot boom in the 1930s after scientists announced owners could catch respiratory diseases from the birds.

Other speculations refer back to Jimi Hendrix releasing a pair of parakeets in London in the 1960s.

According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), parakeets in other parts of England are likely escapees. The RSPB estimates that there are 8,600 breeding pairs in the UK.

Why Liverpool?

Parakeets are known for their love of suburban areas and large rural gardens- and Liverpool is nothing short of vast greenery and beautiful spaces.

Whilst it is not certain exactly why people are spotting more of these birds in Liverpool, the most common solution seems to be the release of parakeets as pets in the past, and that they now can't get enough of the city.
