Why people have got it wrong about Mason Mount and his Chelsea worth

Mason Mount remains a key player for both Chelsea and England.

The 21-year-old has been a mainstay for the Blues since he broke into the first team last season under Frank Lampard.

During his time on loan at Derby County, the midfielder was also an integral part of the side which got to the Championship play-off final under the now Blues boss.

Mount played more than 50 games for the Blues last season, netting seven Premier League goals and adding another five assists to his name.

The England international has again been a regular for Lampard at the start of the current campaign, sparking the comeback against West Brom with an excellent goal.

While Mount had a rare absence in the win over Crystal Palace, he was called up to the England squad where he featured in all three of the internationals.

He started both the Nations League matches against Belgium and Denmark, scoring the winner in the opener and playing well down the right, linking up with fellow Chelsea youngster Reece James.

However, despite his performances and obvious appreciation from coaches, there are still many, mainly on social media, who will not give Mount the credit.

Part of that when it comes to England is the treatment of Jack Grealish, who didn't appear in either of the Nations League matches.

That was despite an excellent, man of the match display in the friendly against Wales.

It's hardly Mount's fault that Grealish was frozen out by Southgate, who left the in-form Aston Villa man on the sidelines.

What Mount does not get enough credit for, and it's something which is rarely picked up on television, is his work-rate off the ball.

Despite all of the matches that he played last season for the Blues, Mount's energy and ability to press was outstanding and he carried that through all the way across the campaign.

It's something that coaches love to see, especially with Lampard who wants his front men and midfield to suffocate the opposition at the back when they can.

That can be the key to their success, and his defensive positioning is vitally important to managers who want to play with a certain stability.

It's true, Grealish might have more creativity, having already scored three Premier League goals and got three assists in just three matches this season.

There is certainly a question mark over whether Southgate was right to leave Grealish on the bench, but Mount's position shouldn't be under too much debate.

For Chelsea, it will be interesting to see where he plays from now on, with Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic returning from injury, so Mount might not play out wide again.

But he will completely still be part of Lampard's plans for the rest of the campaign.
