Why people are wearing red to Freddie Starr's funeral as mourners pay tribute

Freddie Starr is due to be laid to rest today, with many mourners expected to pay tribute to the comedian.

Freddie died in Spain last month after suffering a heart attack, aged 76.

There were fears Freddie would face a pauper's funeral, after becoming a virtual recluse in his later years.

But kind funeral director Michael Fogg said he would pay for the entertainer to be laid to rest in his native Merseyside.

Freddie's funeral takes place today at Prescot Parish Church at 1pm - with people asked to wear red for a very special reason.

Freddie's family have asked that funeral attendees pay their respects by wearing a red tie or a red rose, i n order to honour his famous Teddy Boy jacket.

Freddie regularly donned the jacket for his TV and stage show appearances.

The funeral is set to be a private family service - but mourners are still expected to gather outside the church to pay their respects to the iconic comedian.
