Why paying at McDonald's and KFC drive-thrus could now cost drivers £200

Those who used their mobile phones to pay for fast food at drive-thrus are risking being hit with a nasty fine.

Tough new rules could mean drivers are penalised at favourite spots like McDonald's and KFC without even knowing it.

According to Essex Live, those caught holding their device at the wheel will be slapped with six penalty points and would have to fork up £200.

That's double the previous punishment of three points and a £100 fine.

It comes after cops were asked if those using Apple Pay risked losing their licence to pay for their McDonald's meal.

Jay Chase asked on the social media site if he could use Apple Pay at McDonald's drive-thru without losing his license.

If the car engine is off and the handbrake is applied then motorists will escape a fine, police admit.

But there is one scenario where drivers could be prosecuted.

Currently, it is illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device while driving or riding a motorcycle - and the rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic.

UK law states that you can only use your phone in a vehicle if you need to call 999 in an emergency.

But if caught using your phone behind the wheel, you could end up with six penalty points on your licence and a £200 fine.
