Why Paulo Fonseca was not appointed as Tottenham boss as Newcastle eye Steve Bruce replacement

Former Tottenham managerial target Paulo Fonseca has been linked with a move to Newcastle amid Steve Bruce’s sacking.

The north east club announced that the former Manchester United defender had departed in the wake of their 3-2 defeat to Tottenham at the weekend.

Even before the news was announced, a number of names had been linked to the post amid Newcastle’s £300million Saudi-backed takeover, including ex-Chelsea title winner Antonio Conte.

However, the latest name to emerge was that of Paulo Fonseca - who was also close to being appointed as Spurs boss ahead of the arrival of compatriot Nuno Espirito Santo.

Speaking in September, the former Roma head coach suggested that a deal was all but done but it broke down following the arrival of director of football Fabio Paratici, who held differing opinions on the style of football that the north London club would play.

Talking in an interview with The Telegraph, Fonseca said: "The agreement was done. We were planning the pre-season and Tottenham wanted an offensive coach. It wasn't announced but we planned pre-season players.

"But things changed when the new managing director [Fabio Paratici] arrived and we didn't agree with some ideas and he preferred another coach.

"I have some principles. I wanted to be coach of the great teams but I want the right project and a club where the people believe in my ideas, my way to play, and this didn't happen with the managing director.

"It's what the chairman (Daniel Levy) and the sporting director (Steve Hitchen) asked for - to build a team who can play attractive and offensive football and I was ready for that.

"I cannot be a different way. All my teams will have these intentions. Against the biggest teams, I'm not sending out my teams to defend near their own box."

Of course, Tottenham went in a different direction by appointing former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Espirito Santo.

He has won eight of his 13 matches in all competitions since taking the reins.
