Why Paul Scholes is embarrassed by Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani at Manchester United

Paul Scholes has hit out at Manchester United’s players and transfer policy in the wake of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.

The Norwegian was dismissed as manager following a dismal run of results that saw United win just one of their last seven Premier League games. Michael Carrick has been placed in caretaker charge of the team.

Expectations were high at the start of the campaign after United finished second last term and brought in Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane during the summer.

However, the Reds are currently eighth in the table, 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea and face a crucial Champions League group game against Villarreal on Tuesday evening.

United legend Scholes criticised the club's stars for his old side's current state, and also lambasted the transfer strategy in place at Old Trafford.

“He (Carrick) could’ve left every single player out tonight, not one of them deserves to be playing," he told BT Sport.

“You talk about recruitment, this is Manchester United. Our two best strikers are 36 and 34 (Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani). That’s embarrassing.

"How that has happened I'll never know. The strikers we have, you get to 30 (years old), you probably have to go.

“I never thought they’d win the league, but thought they’d be a lot better than this. A 36- and a 34-year-old? You’ve got no chance.”

Scholes also questioned the character and quality of United’s squad.

Solskjaer was before the season tipped to win his first trophy as a manager, but the club now face a tall order to finish in the top four.

He added: “There's only so much a manager can do. These players are almost like kids still. We keep saying they’re good enough to win trophies they haven’t provided it any of them. We think we have quality and skill but until they win something it might not happen.”
