Why Paul Pogba played on the right wing for Manchester United at Liverpool FC

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Paul Pogba's 'excellent' display on the right-hand side in Manchester United's goalless stalemate with Liverpool.

Pogba was widely expected to line up on the left to accommodate the returns of Scott McTominay and Fred in central midfield but the Frenchman started on the right for the first time in his United career.

Anthony Martial switched to the left, with Marcus Rashford up front, and even though the blunt Martial made way for Edinson Cavani and Rashford moved to the wing, Pogba started and finished the game on the right. The 27-year-old had a glaring chance to potentially win the game but fired straight at Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson late on.

"We didn’t play well in the first half at all," Solskjaer said. "And yeah, we grew more and more into the game. It takes time sometimes when you go away to difficult places like this against a good team to impose yourself on the game.

"We didn’t do well enough to cause them problems in the first-half but we defended well and you didn’t really feel that they were going to cause us, or they didn’t cause us too many problems, either.

"Paul’s position was something that we thought was going to suit him to play there today and I thought it showed because Paul was excellent and he should have had the winner maybe."

United signed teenage right wingers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo on deadline day in October and Diallo completed his move from Atalanta this month.

Diallo, 18, has started training with his new teammates but it is unclear whether he will appear for the Under-23s before he steps up to the first-team. Pellistri, 19, has played eight times for the United second string and is yet to make his full debut.

Pogba could return to midfield in Wednesday's trip to Fulham, where United are bound to make changes after two tight away games at Liverpool and Burnley last week.
