Why Paul Pogba isn't in Manchester United squad despite training return

Paul Pogba was ruled out of Manchester United's Champions League game against Istanbul Basaksehir after experiencing more discomfort in his ankle on Monday.

The midfielder missed the 1-0 win over West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hopeful he would be fit for the Champions League fixture.

But Pogba felt his ankle wasn't right after training on Monday and he was ruled out of the game early on Tuesday morning.

"His ankle was swollen up, he trained yesterday but didn't feel right and this morning was confirmation he couldn't play," Solskjaer told MUTV.

The Norwegian has still picked an attacking line-up, with Edinson Cavani earning his first United start alongside Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, while Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek are both included in midfield.

"We want to go out there, dominate the game and create chances. Hopefully, we can provide the ball into the box for Edinson, he deserves to start the game," said Solskjaer.

"He's getting his fitness, he's played two games for Uruguay in the international break, he'll be flying hopefully, he looks after himself, we've been taking it step by step, you don't want players coming in and getting an injury, especially at his age. We know his experience is going to be valuable for us."
