Why Paul Pogba is on the bench for Manchester United vs Leeds

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left Paul Pogba out of the Manchester United side to face Leeds as he bids to keep him fresh for the Europa League semi-final first leg with Roma.

Pogba drops to the bench with Daniel James coming in, with James winning the vote to start after a fine performance in the reverse fixture, which United won 6-2 in December.

That is on the only change Solskjaer has made from the side that beat Burnley 3-1 a week ago, although after a free midweek it was expected Cavani would return to the starting XI after scored in three successive games.

But the United boss has stuck to the formula that saw Leeds beaten 6-2 at Old Trafford in December. Pogba and Cavani were both on the bench that day and there is only one outfield change from that game, with Mason Greenwood in for the injured Anthony Martial.

“You have to think about this game but also the run of games we’re facing. Dan did really well against Leeds at home, his high energy, his one-against-one, his defending, everything about him suits this game," Solskjaer told MUTV.

Marcus Rashford retains his place in the side and looks to play as a striker once again, despite only training with his teammates once this week as he manages a foot injury.

“We’re managing him, he’s working, he’s getting his CV (cardiovascular) work, he’s doing loads of work in the gym but he’s not been on the pitch training with his boots on, that’s the hard bit on his toe so we give him as much recovery as possible. He trained yesterday and felt no reaction so he’s ready," said Solskjaer.

There were 43 shots in United's 6-2 success back in December and with Solskjaer looking at a similar approach today he's expecting another entertaining game.

“It’s not going to be 0-0, I can guarantee that. It’s two teams that want to attack and attack as quickly as they can," he said.

"When we attack they’re very dangerous on the counter-attack, when they attack they know we’re quite good on the counter-attack. There’s lots of good, attacking players, I think it will be tactically, physically and mentally a very interesting game."
