Why Paul Pogba is not in the Manchester United squad vs Burnley

Manchester United decided to omit Paul Pogba from their squad at Burnley as a precaution after he played twice in the last week.

Pogba returned from a 12-week lay-off as a second-half substitute at Watford on December 22 but was not among the 20 squad members who arrived at Turf Moor, having played in the second-half of United's 4-1 Boxing Day stroll against Newcastle.

Senior United sources told the MEN it would be 'too soon' for Pogba to participate against Burnley since it was 48 hours after the Newcastle game and he had featured in the last two fixtures.

The MEN reported Pogba, 26, reported at United's Carrington training complex on Saturday afternoon but will not make his first start in nearly four months. Pogba played for 30 minutes at Vicarage Road before his 45-minute outing against Newcastle.

Speaking to MUTV, Solskjaer said: "Paul has played in two games now and he's been out for a while, so we didn't feel it was right for him to participate today."

Pogba has only started six times this season due to a troublesome ankle injury he sustained in the draw at Southampton on August 31. Pogba returned for the League Cup third round tie with Rochdale on September 25 and lined up against Arsenal five days later, but has not started since September 30.

Solskjaer revealed the midfielder was 'struck down ill' earlier this month after Pogba had permission to attend his brother Florentin's wedding in Bussy-Saint-Georges, Paris on December 12.
