Why #PardewOut was trending as Newcastle United fans leave Twitter users asking same question

Newcastle United fans certainly got into the spirit of things on Saturday afternoon as they relived the unforgettable 4-4 draw against Arsenal - and even got #PardewOut trending on Twitter.

With professional football in England suspended until at least April 30 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the club delved into the archives and streamed the Magpies' classic clash against the Gunners on their YouTube channel at 3pm.

Here at the Chronicle, we have already liveblogged some memorable games in the last week or so, including the black-and-whites' dramatic final day win against West Ham in 2015.

What really makes these 'live' events is how fans get involved on social media, sharing their memories of the day or even tweeting as if the action is happening here and now.

That's certainly what happened on Saturday and after Robin van Persie put Arsenal 4-0 up at St James' Park on 26 minutes, #PardewOut was soon trending in Newcastle in reference to a game that took place more than nine years ago.

We all know what happened after half-time - the Magpies rallied in style and certainly made their man advantage count after Abou Diaby's red card. Remarkably, Pardew's side scored four goals in the space of 19 astonishing minutes at St James' Park to earn a point.

But those Twitter users who were not tuning in were left wondering why #PardewOut had been trending on the social media platform in the first place.
