Why Oxford boss Karl Robinson did not believe Sunderland were worthy winners

Oxford United boss Karl Robinson was left bitterly frustrated aftre his side’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland, claiming they dominated the game from start to finish.

Jordan Willis scored in just the second minute of the match to help the Black Cats pick up three huge points in the League One promotion race.

But Robinson could not hide his frustration at full-time, after his side pushed and pushed but failed to find an equaliser.

The U’s boss said: “They won it in 90 seconds, but we dominated for 90 minutes.

“I thought in every area we dominated.

“When they defend so deep with the five and the two sitting in front you are reliant on the ball dropping to you.

“They’re in a moment where the ball is dropping for them in the defensive areas.

“I thought we moved the ball efficiently and aggressively.

“I thought we played forwards very early and asked a number of questions of their back line.

“It’s probably the most I’ve seen them pushed so far in this run that they’re on.

“It doesn’t make it any easier for us or the fans that we’ve got beat again, we accept that, but what more can the players do?

“They gave us everything, to a man. I don’t think anybody underperformed, they ran their socks off right to the end.”

While Sunderland did spend large portions of the game defending Oxford attacks - particularly in the second half with the wind of Storm Dennis against them - Phil Parkinson’s side defended well and restricted Oxford to very few clear-cut chances.

And it was a vital three points for the Wearsiders, who narrowed the gap between themselves and automatic promotion to just three points.
