Why over-70s are now being vaccinated in Swansea even though some 80-year-olds are still waiting

People in their 70s are now being vaccinated for coronavirus in the Swansea Bay area while some over-80s are still yet to receive their jabs.

Some people have raised concerns that older members have still not been vaccinated while the jab becomes available to a younger age bracket.

But Swansea Bay University Health Board has now addressed these worries in a statement.

Its explanation is that over 80s are being vaccinated at GP practices, while over 70s are now gradually being called to one of the health board's new mass vaccination centres.

Both these groups were being vaccinated in tandem to allow the health board to reach as many of its vulnerable population as quickly as possible, a spokesman said.

He said GP practices were working through their patient lists and would contact their patients over 80 by letter or telephone call to arrange a vaccination appointment over the next couple of weeks.

All 49 GP surgeries in the health board are vaccinating that age group.

The spokesman added: "Our aim is to have offered a vaccination to all those over 80 by the end of this month.

"We hope to be able to give an update for the arrangements for clinically very vulnerable people very soon.

"So far we’ve given out over 20,000 vaccinations in Swansea Bay, and that number is growing all the time."
