Why One Man’s Quiet Exit From Corporate Life Is Resonating With Millennials Everywhere

The viral video, shared by Biswajit Mohanty, documents what he described as the final day of his corporate career. But unlike the dramatic resignation stories often seen online, his message was calm, reflective, and deeply personal — which may be exactly why it struck such a powerful chord.

“Last working day of corporate career,” he wrote alongside the video.

In the clip, Mohanty reflects on the long journey that brought him to that moment: years of schooling, graduation, post-graduation, an education loan, more than a decade of work experience, and finally a three-month notice period before officially stepping away from corporate life.

According to him, the decision was not impulsive. He revealed that the idea of leaving had been on his mind for nearly three years. What triggered the change, he said, were two difficult questions he asked himself.

Would he still choose the same job if money were no longer a concern? And if his role disappeared tomorrow, would it make any meaningful difference in the real world?

For him, the answers were unsettling.

Mohanty admitted that despite working in polished office spaces and following the conventional definition of success, he struggled to find purpose in his everyday work. Over time, he realised he wanted to create a more direct impact outside the corporate environment.

Instead of quitting overnight, he carefully planned his transition. He spoke about slowly unlearning habits and beliefs that had become normal during his years in corporate culture. Eventually, he moved toward teaching students — a path he felt aligned more closely with the kind of contribution he wanted to make.

One small but emotional moment from the video especially resonated with viewers. Mohanty mentioned preparing his final goodbye email and keeping it saved in drafts before officially signing off. The simple detail captured the emotional weight of leaving behind a chapter that had defined much of his adult life.

However, the line that truly exploded online was his reflection on money and happiness.

“Money can buy convenience, but without time and energy, it cannot give joy or peace of mind.”

That statement quickly became the emotional centre of the discussion.

The comments section soon filled with people sharing their own experiences with burnout, endless deadlines, repetitive routines, and the pressure of constantly performing in high-stress work environments.

Many millennials, particularly those in their 30s, said they deeply related to the feeling of becoming emotionally exhausted despite having stable careers. Some described corporate life as increasingly draining with age, especially as responsibilities such as EMIs, family obligations, and career expectations continue to grow.

One user called the video “one of the cleanest and most honest things” they had seen online in a long time. Others admitted it made them question whether their own careers were truly bringing them fulfillment.

At the same time, not everyone agreed with Mohanty’s decision.

Several viewers pointed out that leaving a stable job is not financially realistic for everyone. Many spoke about the pressure of supporting families, paying loans, raising children, and caring for ageing parents. For them, a corporate salary represents security rather than dissatisfaction.

One comment captured the divide perfectly: what feels like burnout to one person may still be someone else’s dream job or financial lifeline.

Perhaps that is why the video spread so widely across social media. It touched on a conversation many millennials have been quietly having for years — the tension between financial stability and personal fulfillment.

For a generation raised to believe that securing a stable corporate job was the ultimate definition of success, many are now beginning to question whether the trade-off is truly worth it.

The internet has seen countless “I quit my job” stories before, but Mohanty’s video felt different. There were no flashy motivational speeches, no promises of becoming instantly wealthy, and no dramatic claims about escaping the system.

Instead, it was simply an exhausted professional speaking honestly about time, energy, purpose, and what really matters once the excitement of salary packages and promotions begins to fade.

And perhaps that honesty is exactly why so many people cannot stop watching it.
