Why Nottingham Forest's chances of promotion could be left hanging by a thread

Nottingham Forest have 14 league fixtures to give themselves a chance of promotion to the Premier League.

The Reds are in fifth place in the Sky Bet Championship table, and targeting a place in the top two to secure automatic promotion to the top flight.

West Bromwich Albion, who Forest face this weekend at The Hawthorns, are at the top of the table and six points clear of second-placed Leeds United.

Fulham and Brentford are just behind the Whites in the table, with Preston North End make up the rest of the top six alongside Forest.

Bristol City will have an eye on making the play-offs, at least, as will the likes of Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City.

Respected statistics and analysis website FiveThirtyEight have forecast the final standings in the Championship this season, based on a complex model which takes into account a host of factors.

They have crunched the numbers and have predicted that Forest will finish in sixth place in the final Championship standings.

Forest are tipped to accumulate 72 points and finish with a plus-11 goal difference.

are the club predicted to win the league, and are joined by Leeds United in securing automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Brentford are third in the predicted standings, who would play Forest in the play-offs should this table come true.

Fulham and Preston North End are the other two sides tipped to make up the rest of the top six and compete in the play-offs.

Narrowly missing out on the top six is Bristol City, who are tipped to finish one point behind Forest in seventh place.
