Why Nottingham Forest and striker Lewis Grabban deserve more credit after 'almighty' victory

Belief. It is a word which has started to crop up with increasing regularity whenever Nottingham Forest head coach Sabri Lamouchi faces the media.

His players showed they have it, with an almighty performance to see off Cardiff City - a place which has yielded little joy for the club in the past - by a single goal.

And if they keep picking up results like that one, there will be no shortage of it among the Reds fanbase, too.

It is nights like in South Wales where Forest truly shine. They have become specialists at getting the better of tough opposition on the road.

Three games without a win might have been seen as something of a wobble by some - such are the standards Lamouchi’s men have set themselves this season, and such is the unforgiving nature of the Championship.

But this side are made of stern stuff. They have steel running right through their core - something which was firmly on show against the Bluebirds.

They won’t give in.

Just see Lewis Grabban for an example of that.

If there is ever any suggestion the Reds striker is simply all about the goals, a rerun of his 90 minutes in Cardiff will soon set that record straight.

It was a sixth outing without finding the back of the net for the front man, but there is so much more to his game than that.

He was a vital part of this victory.

His hold-up play and use of the ball was exceptional. His work-rate, for someone struggling with a slight injury, was tremendous. And while forwards sometimes have the reputation of being a little selfish, Grabban demonstrated he is very much a team player.

It was his ball which set up Tiago Silva for the winner.

The Portuguese midfielder had picked out Grabban initially with a lofted pass. Tearing down the right, he repaid the favour with an inviting ball into the centre, which was confidently slotted home.

Another Grabban pass, this time to Alfa Semedo, should then have killed the game off with little more than 10 minutes to go, but the substitute’s effort was blocked.

The visitors had created some good chances in the first half, too.

That is an area where there is still room for improvement, with the end product just lacking a little on occasion.

But when they defend as stoically as they did on Tuesday night and have Ben Watson pulling the strings in midfield, a single goal can prove enough.

Maybe that’s why Forest don’t get the credit they deserve. Not that they will care. Sitting third in the table - even if Fulham can go back above them tonight - is the perfect riposte.

Points are not awarded for style - not that the Reds are short on quality anyway. But substance can get you results, and they have no end of that.

The back four of Matty Cash, Yuri Ribeiro and, in particular, the central defensive axis of Tobias Figueiredo and Joe Worrall, was outstanding again.

In goalkeeper Brice Samba, the club have picked up a real find - he wasn’t overly tested by City, but he was assured when he needed to be.

And Watson - playing like a man 10 years younger - provides an added layer of protection.

Add to that an exhaustive effort from the rest of those wearing the Garibaldi - stretching from back to front - and there was very little in the way of change for the home side.

Cardiff argued they should have had a penalty just before the break, when Cash looked to thwart Josh Murphy in the area, but referee Stephen Martin waved away their appeals.

Lamouchi’s men should have been ahead by then anyway.

Silva had an effort deflected wide and Sammy Ameobi also steered one past the post in the opening 10 minutes, before Grabban spurned a great chance from a Joe Lolley ball.

Ameobi forced a couple more saves in the first half and Ryan Yates couldn’t quite control a Cash cross, while Samba comfortably caught a Junior Hoilett header at the other end.

The home side applied a bit more pressure in the second half, after they had fallen behind, but they came up against a roadblock as Forest repelled everything which came their way.

It was a tremendous team effort.

Promotion challenges are not easy. Nothing is handed to you on a plate in this league - just ask some of the Reds’ rivals as they suffered surprise midweek defeats.

But this squad have shown they are prepared to work hard. They are up for the fight.

And coupled with the belief Lamouchi speaks of, that could yet take them a long way.
