'Why not Mustafi?' - Some Arsenal fans rage as Man United prepare to complete loan transfer

Shkodran Mustafi's Arsenal future continues to be uncertain with just four days until the transfer deadline for clubs across Europe.

But the Arsenal man's chances of a move to Roma look to be all but over, with the Italian side reportedly closing in on a loan move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

Mustafi has been heavily linked with a move to the Serie A side in recent weeks, with reports in Italy suggesting that the German defender was set to make a season-long loan move to the Italian capital, with a view to a permanent switch.

However, the latest reports from Italy suggest that Roma are now closing in on the loan signing of Smalling from Manchester United instead, with a €3m agreement between the two clubs over a season-long deal.

And that has got Arsenal fans talking on social media this morning (Thursday), with the move for Smalling likely to have a knock-on effect for Mustafi.

Here's what some fans have been saying on Twitter.

Mustafi's future at Arsenal is in doubt after the Gunners signed David Luiz on transfer deadline day, following on from the signing of William Saliba, who has returned to St Etienne on loan for the season.

The 27-year-old has not yet featured for the Gunners this season, and could yet move before the end of the summer transfer window in Europe, with French side Monaco also linked with the defender.

Meanwhile, some Arsenal fans have been bombarding Russian side Zenit St Petersburg with messages to make a move for the World Cup winner, who joined the Gunners in 2016 in a deal worth around £35m, but has now fallen out of favour after a number of high-profile errors.
