Why Nigel Farage declined taxpayer-funded security

  • Nigel Farage , leader of Reform UK , declined taxpayer-funded security last year, deeming the package "inadequate" for the threat he faces.
  • The security offer, which reportedly included a trained driver, car, and bodyguard, was on the same level as that provided to high-profile Cabinet ministers.
  • Reform UK stated that the state's offering did not match the threat against Mr Farage, leading them to provide their own "proper protection" rather than "gamble with his life".
  • The refusal comes amid heightened concerns for MPs' safety following the alleged killing of Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe.
  • Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood offered Mr Farage a meeting with the head of a parliamentary body responsible for politicians’ security, which he accepted, and Reform UK will provide 24-hour security for its MPs.
