Why Nicola Sturgeon won't be holding daily briefings during election campaign

Nicola Sturgeon has been a permanent fixture on the TV since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in March last year, however that is about to change.

The First Minister has held weekday briefings for around 12 months now but due to the upcoming election she'll be taking a step back from them.

The daily briefings allowed the Scottish Government to announce changes in regulations to the wider public during the height of the pandemic.

It proved to be a vital tool for the government to get its message out.

However, opposition parties criticised the BBC for continuing to show the briefings on impartiality grounds.

On Friday Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said there would only be a briefing is there were significant changes to the route out of lockdown.

She said: "We will then be in the election period so Covid briefings will only take place when there are announcement to make or changes to public health information."

If there are briefing they would be held by Chief Medical Officer Gregor Smith and National Clinical Director Jason Leitch.

It has not been announced if the briefings will continue following the election on May 6.
