Why Newcastle weren't awarded a penalty vs Man City as Alan Shearer voices anger

Newcastle United fans felt hard done by during their game against Manchester City at St James Park, with pundits and ex-players in agreement that the Magpies should have been awarded a penalty after Ederson appeared to foul Ryan Fraser.

Alan Shearer has taken took to social media to share his bewilderment at the decision, with the former Newcastle forward adamant referee Martin Atkinson made the wrong decision.

City raced into a two-goal lead early on in the contest, with Ruben Dias opening the scoring before fellow defender Joao Cancelo rifled in his side's second just before the half hour mark.

Magpies fans will be beginning to wonder if decisions will ever seemingly go their way, with a number of controversial calls going against them including a penalty for James Maddison in their defeat to Leicester City a week ago and the manner of Diogo Jota's equaliser for Liverpool on Thursday night.

It was adjudged that City defender Joao Cancelo got the ball, as explained by Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones, which was understood to be the reason the penalty was given by Atkinson.

Shearer epitomised the feeling for many Newcastle-leaning on-watchers as he posted :"Any danger VAR or ref. Pen all day."

Whilst also commentating on BBC 5 Live Sport, the 51-year-old added: ''It was an absolutely disgusting decision.

''How can VAR not tell the referee that's a howler? It's a ridiculous decision.''

Pep Guardiola's side added a third in the second half through Riyad Mahrez and look set to continue their place at the top of Premier League thus far, with second place Liverpool kicking off later at 4.30pm, looking again to close the gap to just one point.
