Why Newcastle was voted second in poll of best UK cities to visit this summer

Newcastle has come second in a poll of which UK cities will be the best to visit this summer.

It was conducted by hotel chain Staybridge Suites and based on their summer amenities they offered visitors.

These included rooftop bars, the amount of green spaces, riverside activities, outdoor pools and open water swimming areas. They then gave each city a score out of 10.

Of the 15 cities ranked across the United Kingdom, Manchester came out top with a score of 7.5.

It was home to the most rooftop bars outside of London as well as a vast collection of both bars and restaurants lining the River Irwell and the Bridgewater canal.

Newcastle tied with Bristol for second spot with a score of seven .

Whilst not boasting as many rooftop bars as Manchester, judges said Newcastle still offered a number of spots along the Tyne for visitors to enjoy a drink.

The North East has some amazing areas of countryside, including ancient forests in Hareshaw Linn and quaint villages like Haydon Bridge, which is home to Hadrian's Wall and has a National Park on its doorstep.

London and Leeds were at bottom of the summer city rankings, each with a respective score of 3.

Whilst the capital has lots of outdoor space, lido’s and rooftop bars, the size of the city means it isn’t the best place to enjoy the heat.

Similarly, whilst Leeds has a large percentage of green space in the city, the lack of nearby lidos and outdoor swimming opportunities mean it scored low in the overall ranking.

Lisa Crocker, Newcastle General Manager from Stalybridge Suites, said: "Once restrictions are lifted, it is likely that holidays will be restricted to the UK this summer.

"Whilst the coast and countryside are the usual option in the British summer, our research shows that there are lots of amazing activities to enjoy in the UK.

“Cities like Newcastle have perfect summer settings and breathtaking countryside a short drive away, offering the best of both.

"Post lockdown, we are anticipating a big increase in people choosing self-catering accommodation options and the flexibility to feel safe in a home away from home.”

The ranking of the 15 best cities for a summer holiday were as follows:

1. Manchester: 7.5

2. Newcastle, 7

= Bristol: 7

3. Liverpool: 6.5

4. Nottingham: 5.5

5. Belfast: 5

= Glasgow: 5

6. Leicester: 4.5

= Edinburgh: 4.5

= Southampton: 4.5

7. Birmingham: 4

= Sheffield: 4

= Dundee: 4

8. Leeds: 3

= London: 3
