Why Newcastle vs Tottenham was suspended for 16 minutes as Harry Kane ends goalscoring draught

Tottenham Hotspur travelled to St James' Park to face Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

The north Londoners were in desperate need of a win after enduring a torrid September that saw them lose all three of their Premier League fixtures, conceding nine goals in the process.

Spurs did steady the ship earlier this month, defeating Aston Villa 2-1 before the second international break of the season offered a two-week stoppage in club football.

During the break, the Magpies received a huge boost as owner Mike Ashley decided to sell the club after 14 years at the helm, with Amanda Staveley's Saudi-led consortium taking over the reins over a week ago.

The takeover gave the Tyneside-based club a huge boost going into the highly-anticipated fixture and Steve Bruce's side broke the deadlock after less than two minutes through English striker Callum Wilson, who converted a cross from Javier Manquillo.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo's side quickly equalised through French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele before Harry Kane scored his first Premier League goal of the season with a smart lofted finish past Karl Darlow in between the sticks.

Play was then halted shortly before half-time as a supporter appeared to need medical attention.

Tottenham fullback Sergio Reguilon brought the incident to the referee's attention before centre-back Eric Dier quickly ushered for someone to run with a defibrillator across the pitch.

The referee Andre Marriner decided to take the two teams to the sidelines before sending them into the changing rooms shortly after.

The game eventually restarted after 16 minutes as the fan in question was stabilised and rushed to hospital. Minutes later South Korean international Son Heung-Min netted a third goal for Spurs.

Dier then gave Steve Bruce's side some hope, turning the ball into his own net before the game ended 3-2.
