Why Newcastle United cannot sign Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall on the cheap

Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall has been linked with a January move to Newcastle United.

The Sun say the Premier League side see Worrall as a cut price option with his contract set to expire in the summer.

However, Worrall signed a new four-and-half year contract in October 2017, meaning his deal in fact runs until 2022.

Regardless, Forest are unlikely to want to sell and it would be hard to tempt Worrall to leave given he is a boyhood Red who came through the Nigel Doughty Academy.

The player had previously been linked with Crystal Palace and Burnley before falling out of favour under Aitor Karanka.

He subsequently spent last season on loan at Rangers before forcing his way into the Forest first team under Sabri Lamouchi.

The 22-year-old has been in sensational form, playing every Championship game to help the Reds to second place in the table after Saturday's 1-0 win against Brentford.
