Why Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is staying off social media

Steve Bruce has offered his views on social media in football and has urged his players not to get sucked in by online critics.

The Newcastle United chief's son Alex Bruce is a regular user of the social media app Twitter but the former Man United captain refuses to follow the lead of top-flight managers such as Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola who interact online.

Bruce's policy is to focus on the here and now, and not to absorb too much of what is said after matches.

When asked his views on social media, Bruce said: "I don't go anywhere near it.

"I suppose I'm the old dinosaur, but I don't go anywhere near social media.

"I hope that some of the players don't either."

And when discussing why he felt like that, Bruce said: "Look the one thing you can't do is control that.

"You can't look at some of that nonsense and I am sure they are wise enough not to get involved in it."

This season Allan Saint-Maximin has used his account to good effect with Toon fans but in the past others, such as Matz Sels, fell foul of the app, with the former Belgium goalie deleting his account after suffering heavy criticism following a mistake away to Aston Villa in 2016.
