Why Newcastle stars will have to wait until NEXT summer for Vegas trip promised by Mike Ashley

Newcastle stars will have to wait until next summer to go on their all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas - because only FOUR of their first-team squad kept their diaries free.

The Toon endured a dreadful start to the campaign picking up just two points from their first nine games, and owner Mike Ashley said he would send them all to Sin City if they recovered to preserve their Premier League status.

But the Daily Mail report players booked their own holidays after hearing nothing more of the potential reward as the season wore on.

And when plans were put in place for the holiday - only four players declared interest, so it was scrapped.

But Ashley is reportedly keen to stick to his word and organise the trip for next summer - if he is still Magpies owner.

Ashley held talks with Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez in London on Thursday over the Spaniard's future - with his contract at St James' Park set to expire next month.

The Toon supremo wants former Liverpool boss Benitez to stay, and the fans are desperate for him to still be managing the club next term.

But Benitez wants assurances over the club's ambition to sign players and climb the Premier League table next term.

Newcastle finished 13th in the Premier League, 11 points clear of the relegation zone but 12 points adrift of seventh-placed Wolves who will take the final Europa League spot if Manchester City beat Watford in Saturday's FA Cup final.
