Why Newcastle's move for Tottenham target will have major long-term Arsenal implications

Newcastle United's new ownership has kickstarted a wave of rebuilding at the club. With Steve Bruce departing as manager, there is a void left to be filled.

Former Roma manager, Paulo Fonesca is rumoured to take over and will bring more problems than one for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal Way's presenter and writer, Tom Canton (TC) spoke with Editor, Hush Kerai (HK) on Friday morning's Arsenal Agenda Show to discuss how Fonseca and Newcastle could threaten to hijack signings in future transfer windows.

Here's a brief look at what was said:

TC: “Paulo Fonseca, the former Roma manager was linked with the move to Spurs and as we’ve heard from him had an actual agreement with Spurs - were it not for Fabio Paratini who came in at an executive level.

“He went on to appoint Nuno Espirito Santos. Does Newcastle appoint the calibre of someone like Paulo Fonseca’s pedigree to threaten you as an Arsenal fan?

HK: “The idea of where he can take them does. I think the work he’s done at Shaktar is particularly relevant. It’s where he made most of his name or the credit he has been carrying.

“He will attract a high calibre of players, that’s for sure. I’m sure there are scouting networks that he can tap into. Which when you look at the kind of signings that Shaktar have made over the past few years.

“He won’t be signing Matt Richie from Bournemouth or players like that. Sorry, Matt, he’s a fine player I don’t have anything, Matt Richie. They’ll be looking at the next big things and that’s where we come in.

“We are going to be dealing in that same market. We can’t sign that player that’s already made it at a European championship level. The next guy that might get there and we’ve been recently linked with players like Noa Lang, who we’ll have to compete for.

“The big rumour at the moment is Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the deal for him. England’s heir to Harry Kane’s throne at around a £40m deal. We’re going to be competing with Newcastle for him.

“If he does choose Newcastle over us. That’s a really bad look and something that the club’s going to have to think about how they turn that around. If we’re losing to Newcastle in transfer negotiations then we’ve got four or five clubs that have the first pick ahead of us.

“It’s going to be really difficult to get the quality of players that we need if we’ve got Newcastle or another club ahead of us.”
