Why Netflix is sending out more emails saying your bill is rising

Netflix customers have been receiving emails this week stating their bills are rising at the end of the month.

But why now - and is your bill actually going up this time?

After hearing from several customers, Mirror Money got in touch with the streaming service to find out what the price rise is actually linked to.

"We change our prices from time to time to reflect the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as  improvements to our product," a Netflix statement said.

The company explained that the latest price rise is linked to a hike first announced back in May.

At the time, Netflix said its standard plan, which lets you watch two screens at a time, would rise to £8.99 a month, marking a 12.5% rise on its former monthly fee of £7.99.

Netflix's premium plan, which allows subscribers to view programmes on four different screens in HD and Ultra HD, would jump by more than 20% from £9.99 to £11.99.

New customers saw the rise kick in months ago on 29 June, after their free trial ended.

However, for thousands of other customers, the changes are yet to kick in because of "their billing cycle".

The price of the network's basic package, currently £5.99 a month to watch on one screen at a time without an HD option, will remain unchanged.

The changes follow the last increase in October 2017, when standard membership prices jumped by 50p and premium by £1.

"Our basic membership will remain at the same price, ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy our content," the firm added.
