Why mums and babies were staging a sit-in protest at Cabot Circus

A group of mums and young babies said they were sitting ‘in solidarity with people who are dying already’ from the breakdown of the global climate as they staged a sit-in protest at Cabot Circus shopping centre in the centre of Bristol.

As Extinction Rebellion protestors continued to campaign in London, the group of around 50 mums staged the sit-in in the middle of the shopping centre.

There were similar actions in towns and cities across the country, but the one in Bristol included singing too.

The mums and carers sat down to feed their children at noon, and remained in the centre being watched by security for more than half an hour.

Dr Grace Thompson, a GP in South Gloucestershire, was one of those protesting, with two of her three children.

“This is really to say that we’re mothers and that we’re worried about climate breakdown and we’re sitting in solidarity with people who are already dying from climate change,” she said.

“Also we’re worried about the future of our children, who may well die young from climate change in this country,” she added.

The protest in Bristol is the latest to take place staged by Extinction Rebellion, a global organisation that has its roots in the city and nearby Stroud.

Activists from Bristol have been in London all week and last week, with many to protest about Government inaction over the climate emergency.
