Why Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Aldi are still running out of eggs

Getting your hands on certain items has been difficult since lockdown began, particularly eggs.

The shortage has left shoppers wondering why getting eggs has become a problem, despite less demand on supermarkets and panic buying almost completely stopping.

Supermarkets across the country have begun lifting restrictions on stock for weeks now and, apart from social distancing and queuing, they’re pretty much back to normal.

But many have complained that they’re struggling to get hold of eggs - and now there’s an explanation as to why, reports Kent Live .

The British Egg Industry Council, which represents egg farmers, has shed light on the issue.

It put the problem down to the “unprecedented demand” for eggs and the fact that customers are using more eggs as they spend more time at home during lockdown .

A spokesman said: “Consumer demand for eggs has been on the up for a number of years but the industry has been dealing with a period of unprecedented demand.

“While the initial panic buying of food has ceased, easing some of the pressure on the supply chain, we are seeing consumers use more eggs at home due to the Covid-19 lockdown, and the industry has been doing its utmost to ensure eggs get to shops as quickly as possible.”

To try to lessen the problem, the council said some supermarkets have been selling liquid eggs.

“Eggs have been redirected from food service and manufacturing to help meet demand, and you will see cartons of liquid egg on sale in certain supermarkets to help alleviate some of the issues" the spokesperson added.
