Why military helicopters have been spotted flying over Bristol this week

The RAF has revealed why military helicopters have been flying over Bristol this week.

The Chinook helicopters have been spotted by residents across the city this week, prompting online speculation as to why they had been called out.

One person wrote on Thursday: "What’s going on here then? Unrelated ? Three helicopters coincidentally over the Bristol Channel at the same time?"

To which one person replied: "Flew over us a short while ago, kids loved watching it."

An eyewitness said he had seen quite a few Chinooks fly over his house in Brislington over the last week - including one today (February 19) and one yesterday (February 18).

And another social media user shared a video of one of the helicopters flying south over Bristol last week.

The RAF has now confirmed the Chinooks were carrying out routine training in the area.

Last week, a police helicopter hovered over South Bristol for more than an hour, with residents in Ashton Gate and Bedminster woken up by the noise.
