Why Michael Owen described Manchester United goal vs Aston Villa as 'a funny goal'

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen described Bruno Fernandes' opener against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as a "funny goal".

The Portugal international, who filled in for Antony on the right wing, netted the 100th league goal of his career shortly before half-time. He pounced on Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez only parrying Marcus Rashford's effort into his path and cooly tucked away his 11th goal of the season in all competitions.

Fernandes' strike was nothing more than what United had deserved, with Erik ten Hag's side dominating proceedings during the first half. They had earlier gone close to getting themselves in front through both Marcel Sabitzer and Casemiro.

But although it was not the most glamorous goal that United have scored this season, Fernandes would not have cared one bit, especially as it marked his first Premier League goal since early-February. Nevertheless, Owen pulled no punches in his assessment of it, choosing to criticise Villa in making it look so easy.

"It was a funny goal, really," Owen told Premier League Productions. "It comes from Villa's goal kick.

"A simple header forward, and Rashford is just onside, it's a tame effort from him and I'm not quite sure what the goalkeeper should do there. Bruno ends up mopping it up and bouncing it over [Martinez]."
