Why Michael Bridges is hoping Newcastle United beat his old club Leeds United next weekend

Michael Bridges has admitted he would like to see Newcastle United beat Leeds United in next weekend’s clash between two of his former sides.

Bridges played 81 times for the Whites during his career in comparison to just nine for Newcastle.

He was seen as one of English football’s brightest young talents while at Leeds, scoring 19 goals in 34 appearances in the 1999/00 season.

However, after suffering a serious dislocated ankle injury during a Champions League tie away at Besiktas the following season, he was never the same again.

The injury led him to having several knee problems throughout the rest of his career and almost marked the beginning of the end of his time at Elland Road.

In his last season at Leeds, he was loaned out to Newcastle where he made nine appearances and despite his lesser involvement with them as a player, it is the Magpies he would like to see come out on top next weekend due to their more precarious position in the table.

Via quotes from the Chronicle, he said: "The Mags need the victory more than Leeds who look as if they have pulled away from trouble. I'm desperate for the black-and-whites to escape too."

Leeds currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, eight points ahead of the bottom three and nine ahead of Newcastle, who are currently 19th .

The Magpies have won just one league game all season and will be hoping to kick start their road to survival over the next few weeks when they face Watford, Leeds and Everton in consecutive matches.
