Why Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac are not involved for Arsenal vs Lyon in Emirates Cup clash

Arsenal decided to rest Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac for Sunday's Emirates Cup clash against Olympique Lyon.

Unai Emery's side met the Ligue 1 side at the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners begin their final stretch of pre-season matches ahead of the Premier League campaign's curtain-raiser at Newcastle United on Sunday, August 11.

Ozil and Kolasinac were attacked in North London while the former was driving the pair.

The latter fought off a masked carjacker with his bare hands in a clip that has gone viral online.

Now, as expected, the pair have been given the match off after the traumatic ordeal in Childs Hill on Thursday evening.

A spokesperson for Arsenal said shortly after the incident: "We have been in contact with both players and they are fine."

Police have since investigated the incident and took statements at the scene.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "It was reported that suspects on motorbikes had attempted to rob a man who was driving a car.

"The driver, along with his passenger, managed to get away unharmed and travelled to a restaurant in Golders Green, where they were spoken to by officers."

Arsenal fans, meanwhile, support the decision made by the club to leave Ozil and Kolasinac for today's game.
