Why Meghan Markle 'was advised not to wear tiara by Charles for state dinner'

Meghan Markle was told not to wear a tiara for her first overseas dinner by Prince Charles who warned it would not be appropriate, say reports.

The Prince of Wales is claimed to have told the Duchess of Sussex that the move might look "extravagant" while she was on a trip to Fiji last year.

The 37-year-old had apparently wanted to borrow a jewelled tiara from the Royal Collection for the tour to Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand with Harry.

However, her father-in-law is said to have stepped in to advise it is best to avoid doing so in parts of the Commonwealth where it can be seen as "extravagant".

A source told the Mail on Sunday : "Meghan did not understand all of this because she was new to the role and so Prince Charles told her that it would not be appropriate.

Charles is thought to play a more active role in planning overseas tours since the Queen stepped back in 2015.

The choice of whether or not to wear a tiara is determined by the dress code of the event, as well as personal preference .

State dinners are also less formal than state banquets which could have been another reason Meghan went tiara free,
