Why Matthijs de Ligt not joining Barcelona could be bad news for Man Utd

Matthijs de Ligt is facing a huge choice on his future early next week.

The Ajax star, who was chased by Manchester United , looks set to decide between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain as he prepares for a big-money move.

The 19-year-old has been heavily tipped to follow team-mate Frenkie de Jong to the Nou Camp but could be tempted by a big-money offer from the French giants.

If he does decide against a move to Spain, it could spell bad news for Manchester United as the Catalan club turn their attentions elsewhere.

They have been linked with a move for United star Marcus Rashford and, according to Mundo Deportivo , they will place their focus on another striker rather than pursuing another centre-back.

Barcelona won the La Liga title but were stunning by Liverpool in the Champions League and suffered Copa del Rey final failure prompting a desire to spend money to refresh Ernesto Valverde's squad.

De Ligt is their top target but centre-back is not believed to be a pressing concern, meaning if they do not land their man they will use their resources elsewhere.

A left-back and striker would become their preference, with Rashford said to be high on their list amid claims an approach has already been made.

Rashford has just one year remaining on his Old Trafford contract having failed to put pen to paper on a new deal, although the club have an option for an extra year in their favour.

Sport claim the 21-year-old has been made a priority with an enquiry already made about signing Rashford.

United are reluctant to sell, but Barcelona believe the good relationship between president Josep Maria Bartomeu and Ed Woodward could give them a chance.

Barcelona are preparing for a busy summer transfer window, with a list of players who could potentially leave.

It is understood the club will consider offers for Jasper Cillessen, Samuel Umtiti, Malcom, Rafinha, Andre Gomes, Denis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Nelson Semedo.
