Why Mason Greenwood isn't in Manchester United squad vs West Ham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Mason Greenwood is missing from Manchester United's squad to face West Ham today due to illness.

Greenwood, 17, who hit United's winner in their 1-0 win over Astana in the Europa League on Thursday, is suffering from tonsillitis and therefore didn't travel with the Reds' squad to the London Stadium.

There had been speculation that Solskjaer was resting his teenage forward, but in a pre-match interview with Sky Sports , the Norwegian revealed the true reason for Greenwood's absence.

"He's not feeling well," said Solskjaer.

"He's had tonsilitis. So hopefully it won't be too bad because he just had a good game Thursday night and we need him at times. Hopefully he'll be back soon."

Solskjaer stuck with the same front four that started United's 1-0 win over Leicester last weekend, with Marcus Rashford supported by Daniel James, Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira.

United have only won one of their previous five league visits to West Ham, though it was too early to call this clash with the Hammers a "must win" — though accepted it was a crucial one as his side look for a third successive win.

"It’s early but if you look at the league there are loads on eight points, so games like this are important," he added.

"The pressure was on us last week we just continue improving and hopefully our attackers can score."
