Why Mason Greenwood impact is no surprise to Manchester United youth teammate

Manchester United hopeful Aidan Barlow says he is not surprised one bit by the impact Mason Greenwood has made in the first-team.

The Academy striker shone for United on pre-season and has featured from the bench in four of the club's first five Premier League matches.

Greenwood is yet to net a competitive goal for the first-team but is expected to get even more opportunities under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now that the fixture congestion has kicked in.

Barlow, who is currently on loan at Tromsø Idrettslag, insists he is not surprised by the impact his good friend has made and is backing him to continue on his upward trajectory.

"Nah, it is no surprise," Barlow told MEN Sport of Greenwood's impact.

"He's a top player and I'm sure he'll become one as well. He'll keep working hard and he's humble. He will keep his head down, and I am happy for him."

Greenwood could get his first start of the season on Thursday night when United host FK Astana in the Europa League, while fellow Academy stars Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong are both also in line to feature.

Barlow will be watching his teammates from afar as he continues his loan spell in the north of Norway, but he is still confident he can make an impact in the first-team once he returns to Old Trafford himself.

Barlow added: "I always watch the games. When the youth team plays on MUTV I am also watching that as well. So I am always keeping up.

"I've just got to keep my head down here, do what I have to do here and then hopefully that happens.

"There are opportunities there (at United) in the first-team. I think, you know, to grasp one I can, and hopefully I will do that."
