Why Martin Dubravka was dropped by Slovakia after Newcastle injury worries

Martin Dubravka missed Slovakia's World Cup qualifier with Malta - but his absence in the internationals shouldn't worry Newcastle fans.

There was worry on Tyneside that Dubravka - who was man of the match for a toiling Slovakia in their surprise draw in Cyprus - wasn't even included among the substitutes as his country looked to revive their World Cup hopes.

But it can be revealed he was suffering with a stomach bug and there was no recurrence of the ankle problem that saw him miss the first half of the Premier League season.

Slovakia manager Stefan Tarkovic revealed the injury after his side laboured to a 2-2 home draw with Malta which leaves their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

He said: "Martin Dúbravka was still on the pre-match tactics in the line-up, but the stomach problems that were bothering him eventually prevented him from going into the match, he was not even on the list," he said.

Dubravka - who is excellent form on Friday - is going to be a key man for Newcastle after returning to the side in place of Karl Darlow recently.

Slovakia take on Russia in their final international of the break on Tuesday and the hope is that Dubravka will return.
