Why Marcus Rashford will make Bruno Fernandes even better for Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has made quite the impact since moving to England.

The Portuguese midfielder has played five Premier League matches, scoring two and registering three assists.

Beyond his scoring numbers, he's added a degree of penetration to Manchester United's play.

Fernandes is a player capable of producing a decisive end product, but, as a result of his inclination to deliver in the opposition's half, he has to take plenty of risks on the ball.

That is perhaps best captured by his tendency to play through passes to his teammates.

Fernandes hasn't accumulated many Premier League minutes at his new club just yet but no player who has played over 1,000 minutes in the league this season has attempted more through passes per 90 than the United man.

The 25 year-old is averaging 3.42 attempts per 90 which betters second-placed Kevin De Bruyne on 3.37, and third-placed David Silva on 3.12.

However, one concern is that Fernandes' success rate with these passes is very low.

The Portuguese international is completing just 5.6 percent of his through passes, compared to De Bruyne's 38.4 percent and Silva's 34.5 percent.

Fernandes clearly wants to play penetrative passes, but for whatever reason, they aren't finding teammates. He's attempted 18 through passes in total, with only one being successful.

Obviously, it's unfair to judge United's new man based on 450 minutes of football, but his numbers are interesting considering the impending return of one player in particular.

Marcus Rashford is yet to play with Fernandes, as he's currently recovering from a back injury sustained in January, but it's reasonable to suggest that the two will thrive together once he's fit.

Rashford is one of the fastest players in the league and he has a preference to run in behind opposing defences, while Fernandes clearly likes to find runs of that nature.

Rashford has previously gelled with Paul Pogba on the pitch for that same reason, with United's No.10 benefiting from the French midfielder's ability to find him in the final third.

Once United's star attacker regains full fitness, perhaps he'll be crucial to unlocking the passing ability that Fernandes appears so desperate to showcase.
